Grammaticalization Conference in Mainz 2015

At the symposium on “Areal patterns of grammaticalization and cross-linguistic variation in grammaticalization scenarios”, which took place on 12-14 March 2015 at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, presentations by the leading scholars combining expertise in historical linguistics and grammaticalization research were held.

The overall topic was the variation of grammaticalization scenarios in a variety of language families (Slavic, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, Bantu, Mande, Khoisan, Sioux, Mayan and more).

Besides documenting new grammaticalization paths, the important question of how to reconcile universal results of grammaticalization processes with the fact that the input to these processes is language- and construction-specific was addressed.
